Your first steps in Thornvale
Thornvale is played one tile at a time, seen from above. Everything below works the same online and offline.
Getting started
- Open the game and create a free account with your email and a password. One account can hold up to 5 characters.
- Pick a name, a vocation and your outfit colours. Your name is yours from then on.
- You start in a town. Towns are protection zones: monsters can't follow you in, so it's a safe place to trade and heal.
- Talk to the people in town (left-click them) to buy gear, learn spells and pick up your first quest.
Prefer to try it first? Choose Play offline. Offline characters are saved in your browser only and don't appear online.

Vocations
Your vocation decides how your health, mana and carrying strength grow, which weapons you can use, and which spells you can learn.
- Knight: heavy armour, swords, axes and clubs. The most health and the least mana. Fights up close.
- Paladin: bows, crossbows and spears, plus holy magic. Fights from range and keeps moving.
- Sorcerer: wands, fire and energy magic, and powerful area spells, but a fragile body.
- Druid: rods, ice and earth magic. The strongest healer, able to heal others too.
Spells and runes
Spells are cast by saying their words in chat, for example exura to heal yourself. Learn spells from spell trainers in town. Each spell needs a certain level, mana and vocation.
- Some spells share a cooldown: attack spells 2 seconds, healing 1 second, support 1 second, potions 1 second.
- To heal a friend, say
exura sio "Namewith their name after the quote mark. - There are healing, attack, wave, beam, support and conjuring spells, and rune spells that turn blank runes into magic runes.
- Put spells on F1 – F12 from your spellbook so you don't have to type them in a fight.
- Runes are bought or made and come in stacks. Click a rune (or its hotkey) and aim with the crosshair. Area runes show the circle they will hit. Right-click or Esc cancels.
Items, depot and bank
- You have 10 equipment slots: helmet, amulet, backpack, armour, weapon, shield, legs, ring, ammunition and boots.
- Two-handed weapons take the shield slot too. Ammunition must match your bow or crossbow. Wands and rods use mana per shot.
- Everything has a weight, and your capacity limits how much you carry.
- Your depot is reachable from any locker and holds 60 items. Store what you don't need to carry.
- The bank keeps your gold safe. Deposit, withdraw and transfer gold to other players at any banker.
- Trading with another player only completes when both of you accept, and the game checks that everything fits.
Getting around
- The world has seven floors, from towers two floors up to dungeons four floors deep.
- Use stairs and ladders by walking onto them or clicking them. Rope spots need a rope, and loose stones need a shovel to dig through.
- Ship captains in harbour towns sail you to other ports for a fee.
- Underground it's dark: bring a light spell or a ring that glows.
Parties and PvP
- Parties: team up to share the experience from monsters you kill together. Members need to be close to each other and of similar level.
- PvP is on online: players can fight each other everywhere except protection zones such as temples, depots and town doors.
- Secure mode is on by default. It stops you from attacking unmarked players by accident and spares them from your area spells. You can switch it in the game.
- Attacking a player who didn't attack you first gives you a white skull for a while, and locks you out of protection zones for a minute.
- Killing players who didn't attack you is an unjustified kill. Three in 24 hours gives a red skull, and a red-skulled player who dies drops their whole backpack.
- Defending yourself is always allowed.
Tips for your first hours
- Buy health potions before you leave town, and put them on a hotkey.
- Hunt close to town first. If a fight goes wrong, walk back: monsters can't follow you into a protection zone.
- Watch your target's health bar and your own. Heal early rather than late.
- Sell loot to the traders in town. They pay for monster parts as well as gear.
- Hunting with friends shares the experience by how much damage each of you dealt.
